A Whisker Away

A third song called "Usotsuki" by J-pop duo Yorushika will be featured as the ending theme in the upcoming Netflix movie A Whisker Away (Japanese title: Nakitai watashi wa neko wo kaburu), following "Hana ni bourei" and "Yakou."

The rising duo has been enjoying a boost in popularity in recent weeks, as the music video accompanying the animated feature's main theme song, "Hana ni bourei," has been viewed over 10 million times since its release at the end of April. The track is currently the group's highest-ranking song on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, peaking at No. 6.

Yorushika shared a promotional clip featuring "Usotsuki" and previously unreleased scenes from the movie in which the protagonist, Miyo Sasaki -- who can transform into Taro the Cat by using a mysterious mask -- tries to bridge the distance between herself and the boy she likes, Kento Hinode. Songwriter and guitarist for the duo, n-buna notes that the directors assured him that he was free to do what he wanted, which relieved his initial anxiety of having to write for a specific work.

"The concept for our next album happened to be 'the mood of the season between spring and early summer,' so I figured that wouldn't be far off from the atmosphere of the movie and wrote what I'd been planning to write anyway at that time," he explains. "All three songs are about cities that we look back on."

He also shares that the title "Usotsuki" -- stylized with the kanji characters for "lie" and "moon" in Japanese -- means "Liar" and that he quoted poems by early 20th century Japanese poet Ozaki Hosai throughout the work.

A Whisker Away will begin streaming Thursday (June 18), exclusively on Netflix.
