Japanese hitmaker Gen Hoshino kicked off his POP VIRUS World Tour on Saturday (Nov. 23), with his first-ever show in Shanghai at the National Exhibition & Convention Center Hong Arena.

The "Idea" artist's four-stop, five-concert international tour sold out in succession soon after tickets went on sale. The Shanghai venue was filled with a certain kind of tension as his fans in China waited in anticipation for the J-pop star's first-ever show in the area to begin, and welcomed him with loud cheers and applause the moment he appeared onstage.

Hoshino opened his set with the title song of the tour, "POP VIRUS," which immediately brought the audience to their feet. After addressing his fans in Chinese, he performed a string of hits including "SUN," "Doraemon," and his smash-hit number from 2016, "Koi."

The POP VIRUS World Tour in Shanghai show was an absolute blast! Along with the surprising amount of fun I had, getting to see the smiling faces of so many of you from Shanghai singing and dancing along almost brought tears to my eyes! Thank you so very much! I’ll definitely come back here soon! To the people who were able to make it and to the people who couldn’t, the next time I come to Shanghai, let’s meet up with smiles on our faces!

He also performed his latest digital release, "Same Thing," for the first time live, hyping up the crowd with his first English-language track, which he recorded in collaboration with Superorganism.

The multi-talented artist carried himself with confidence and engaged the audience throughout the concert with his usual charm. He assured fans during the encore in both Chinese and Japanese: "I'll come to Shanghai again, so let's meet with smiles when I do!" The audience showered him with lasting applause and cheers as the first show of his first-ever world tour ended in huge success.
