Arashi Tops Japan Hot 100 as Kenshi Yonezu Ends DA PUMP's Reign Over Video Views
Arashi jumps to No. 1 on this week's Billboard Japan Hot 100 dated Oct. 22 to 28 with "Kimi No Uta," the theme song of a currently airing TV drama series starring member Masaki Aiba. The Johnny's boy band's new single sold 382,812 copies in its first week, leading physical sales and look-ups while also landing at No. 2 for Twitter mentions.
"Furari Ginza" by Morning Musume. '18 bows at No. 2 on the Japan Hot 100 with 155,665 copies sold. The J-pop girl group collected points in a balanced way, coming in at No. 2 for physical sales, No. 15 for look-ups, No. 14 for radio airplay, No. 34 for downloads, and No. 39 for Twitter.
K-pop star Jae Joong's "Defiance" ascends 48-3 with 126,946 copies sold, taking the No. 3 spot for physical sales. While performing modestly in other metrics such as look-ups (No. 11) and downloads (No. 29), the song ruled Twitter mentions this week, which was a rare phenomenon as the recent norm had been for the song leading the physical sales metric to be the most-Tweeted as well.
As predicted last week, Kenshi Yonezu's new single, "Flamingo," put an end to the DA PUMP's consecutive reign over the video views metric. The music video for "Flamingo" was viewed 6,367,959 times during the chart week, and the difference between DA PUMP's "U.S.A." was close, a mere 35,226 views.
The release of the "Flamingo" video has also breathed new life into his long-running hit "Lemon," and the view count of the latter has shot up 648,754 times from last week (5,224,500 views). With two sold-out shows at Makuhari Messe over the weekend and "Flamingo/TEENAGE RIOT" coming out Wednesday (Oct. 31), the multi-talented Japanese hitmaker is on his way of becoming one of the most-talked-about artists of 2018.
Aimyon debuts at No. 7 with "Konya Konomama," also the theme song of an ongoing TV drama series. The song was released digitally and came in at No. 3 for downloads, No. 2 for streaming, and No. 3 for radio. The 23-year-old Japanese singer-songwriter has landed seven songs on the Japan Hot 100 mostly through her strength in the streaming metric, and is solidifying a new way of creating hits by reaching the masses through audio streaming.
The Billboard Japan Hot 100 combines physical and digital sales, radio airplay, Twitter mentions, YouTube and GYAO! video views, Gracenote look-ups and audio streams from Apple Music, AWA, Google Play Music, KKBOK, LINE MUSIC, Rakuten Music, Recochoku provided by Gfk Japan, as well as streaming counts based on lyrics displayed on PetitLyrics.
