AKB48's "Sentimental Train" ascends to No. 1 on this week's Billboard Japan Hot 100, dated Sept. 17 to 23, after the CD sold 1,614,316 copies in its first week. The latest million-seller by the J-pop girl group came in at No. 1 for physical sales and Twitter mentions, No. 3 for look-ups, No. 20 for radio airplay and No. 31 for downloads.
As a comparison, "Sentimental Train" performed better than "Ja-Ba-Ja" -- another AKB48 million-selling single released this year -- in first-week physical sales figures and the Twitter/radio/look-up positions of the chart's metrics, demonstrating that the latest single drew a great deal of interest before its release.
Namie Amuro's retirement launched nine of her past hits into last week's Japan Hot 100, and even after the hype surrounding her final days in the limelight has settled down somewhat, her absence appears to be hitting fans hard. This week, the J-pop icon charts three more songs for a total of 12 tracks in the top 100, the highest being her 2016 hit "Hero" at No. 8 and leading downloads again: It led the metric last fall when she announced her retirement.
