Japan's May J. Kicks Off Domestic 'Harmony Tour' Featuring String Quartet
J-pop singer May J. kicked off her domestic concert tour this past weekend in Saitama, Japan. Her 2018 Harmony Tour will hit eight cities around the country featuring a set backed by a four-piece band and string quartet.
The 30-year-old songstress performed with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra in November 2017 for a Billboard Classics concert, and noted that the experience inspired her to incorporate strings into her live performances. Billboard Classics is a series of concerts by Billboard Japan that presents collaborations between pop artists and a full orchestra.
May J., known for her uplifting Japanese cover of "Let It Go" from the movie Frozen, told the opening-night crowd that she focused on the harmony of her voice and string arrangements when selecting the songs on the set list.
"It felt good singing them, and I think this has expanded my range of expression," she said. "I'm sure the harmony will change color according to each venue, so I look forward to creating special harmonies specific to each location with all of you."
May J.'s Harmony Tour will continue until the final show at Zepp DiverCity in Tokyo on Sept. 16.
