Newlyweds Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, attended Prince Charles’ 70th birthday Tuesday (May 22) to celebrate his charity work and “infectious” energy. The garden party at Buckingham Palace was the first event the two have attended as their first royal duty as husband and wife since they wed Saturday at Windsor Castle.

Prince Charles’ actual birthday is November 14, but his party was held six months prior for more suitable weather conditions. As the new couple suited up for their first event together, Prince Harry gave a speech about his father’s “incredible work” for the last 50 years.

“It has certainly inspired William and I to get involved in issues we care passionately about and to do whatever we can to make a difference,” he said. Prince Harry opened his speech by remembering the victims of the Manchester attack on its one-year anniversary. The emergency responders who were on the scene that night attended the royal garden party.
