Mr. Children

Veteran pop-rock band Mr. Children tops the latest Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart, dated July 24 to 30 with "himawari," bumping up from No. 59 last week.

The single, a characteristic rock ballad that graces the credits of the movie Kimi No Suizo Wo Tabetai, leads in two metrics of the chart's measurement (physical sales, with 131,463 copies sold, and look-ups) as well as coming in at No. 8 in radio airplay, No. 12 in Twitter mentions, and No. 74 in video views.

The four-member band celebrating its 25th anniversary this year has three songs charting in the Japan Hot 100 this week: the other two are "Hanabi," originally released in 2008, at No. 13 and "365 Nichi" from 2009 at No. 57 -- the older titles powered by huge gains in downloads.

Speaking of downloads, bowing at No. 1 is the digital single "Wasted Love" by Hiroomi Tosaka from Sandaime J Soul Brothers, which also leads Twitter mentions this week.

Hikaru Utada's “Forevermore,” the theme song for the TBS drama Gomen, Aishiteru, follows at No. 2. These two tracks leave the rest of the competition far behind this week, but at No. 3 is the aforementioned "Hanabi" by Mr. Children, which drops a notch but is still going extraordinarily strong for a nearly decade-old song.

Twice sweeps up the top four spots for video viewing with "TT," "Signal," "Like Ooh-Ahh" and "Cheer Up." These singles are enjoying steady streaming figures and overwhelming digital download counts as well, so depending on how they keep doing on the video-viewing front, the multinational girl group will likely be staying in the Japan Hot 100 for the foreseeable future.

The Billboard Japan Hot 100 combines physical and digital sales, radio airplay, Twitter mentions, YouTube and GYAO! video views, Gracenote look-ups and audio streams from Apple Music, AWA, Google Play Music, KKBOK, LINE MUSIC provided by Gfk Japan, as well as streaming counts based on lyrics displayed on PetitLyrics.
