Paco Naveira aka Octopus Kid.

An Argentinean in New York -- that is just a simplified notion of a far more complex story which finds Paco Naveira making music in the Big Apple, with a personal project that has released its first record.

At 34 years of age, with a 4-month-old daughter, Naveira has lived in New York since 2008, when he enrolled to study at the prestigious NYU after a short stint in London.

Barely settled, he began playing in singer-songwriter bars. Soon, he earned a spot in the stimulating yet competitive scene, playing in Greenwich Village, Williamsburg (Brooklyn) and the mythical Lower East Side.

Demonstration is Naveira's first record under the "Octopus Kid" moniker, and it accurately shows the growing maturity of a musician who is open to share with artists of different styles.

The errant life and the question of immigration seep into an album notable, from the very start, for its absence of sonic prescriptions. While it starts with a rocker feel, it also showcases acoustic moments, glimpses of the '60s and a deep love for the song format. To complement such diversity, Naveira sings in different vocal registers, both in English and in Spanish with equal intensity.

Demonstration is, in a certain way, a reflection of the past 15 years of his life -- songs that began in Buenos Aires, and others that came to light in his diaspora. From there comes the constant feeling of it being an album where each track is a world of its own.

Nicolás Bereciartúa’s involvement further explores the notion of search and playfulness. The former Viticus guitarist leads us on a trip through the many traditions of American rock.

Before we relax, Octopus Kid twists another of his tentacles and moves closer to the register of Devendra Banhart at his most Venezuelan moment.

And so on, and so forth, influences come and go, making the record a journey through different musical horizons. Perhaps that is also a natural consequence of living in cosmopolitan New York.

In a nutshell, Demonstration is a showcase of a music artist who tries to blur the lines with absolute abandon.
