2019 Grammys

Alicia Keys Covers Juice WRLD, Coldplay, Lauryn Hill & More at 2019 Grammys

2019 Grammys host Alicia Keys took a breather from her emcee duties to tickle the ivories at the 61 Annual Grammy Awards. But Keys being the prodigiously talented singer and instrumentalist that she is, she didn’t just play one -- she commandeered two pianos in homage to pioneering Black pianist Hazel Scott. Seated between two grand pianos like Scott in the 1943 Mae West flick The Heat’s On (where Scott displayed her effortless control of anything within the reach of her fingertips), Keys covered a variety of iconic songs old and new.

The theme of her performance was “those songs that live inside of you because it was done so well you wish you wrote it.” Among them? Everything from “Killing Me Softly With His Song” (popularized by Roberta Flack and Fugees) to Juice WRLD’s “Lucid Dreams” to Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” to Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable” to Drake’s “In My Feelings” to Coldplay’s “Clocks” to Ella Mai's "Boo'd Up" to Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing).” And for the hell of it, Keys even sang a song she DID write: “Empire State of Mind.”
