Brandi Carlile is officially a Grammy winner. It was announced in the show pre-telecast that the folk singer swept three categories she was nominated for: best Americana album (for By The Way, I Forgive You) and both best American roots song and best American roots performance (for “The Joke”).

While accepting her award for best American roots song, Carlile admitted that she wrote her speech “win or lose,” and if they lost, she intended to give it to the record’s co-producer, Dave Cobb, in an envelope with a heart on it. Standing alongside Codd and frequent collaborators Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Carlile explained how Americana music is “the island of the misfit toys.”

“I am such a misfit,” the singer started. She went on to explain that she came out as lesbian when she was 15 years old and that she was never invited to any parties in high school. “I never got to attend a dance. To be embraced by this enduring and loving community has been a dance of a lifetime,” she said. “Thank you for being my island.”

Carlile is the most nominated female artist at the 2019 Grammys. She is up for three major categories during tonight’s Grammys telecast: album of the year, song of the year and record of the year.
