Here's What Happened at the Grammy Afterparties
The 2017 Grammy Awards are now in the history books, though the action doesn’t stop there. Music’s big night typically runs until dawn (or later).
The good vibes spread across Los Angeles as the winners, losers, performers and participants relaxed and soaked up the atmosphere at the myriad Grammy afterparties. Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter staff were among the stars and party animals. (All time stamps are PDT.)
9.20 pm: The line for the Warner Music Group party is snaked around the block as a separate crowd of people try to push their way into the checkpoint. Security guards are yelling that they will shut the party down if people don't clear the front area.
9:40 pm: Fire marshals threaten to shut down the Warner event at Milk Studios.
9:49 pm: Kat Graham is seen leaving the Universal party at The Theater at Ace Hotel
9:52 pm: Aloe Blacc is spotted inside the Universal party talking to a friend and drinking a cocktail.
10:03 pm: Lady Gaga, fresh from her impressively raging appearance with Metallica at the Grammys, arrives at the Interscope Records party at the new Peppermint Club in West Hollywood 10. Gaga is hard to miss. She's clad in a black halter-type top that exposes her tattoos.
10:05 pm: Universal Music Group chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge is at his company's party, casually taking pictures by the bar.
10:06 pm: Bryan "Baby" Williams and Ronald "Slim" Williams, co-founders of Cash Money, seen making their way through the crowd to greet Lucian Grainge and Monte Lipman, chairman/CEO of Republic Records.
10:10 pm: Aloe Blacc greets Lucian Grainge at the UMG bash.
10:20 pm: Gaga chats and grooves lightly to the music — disco, Motown, the occasional Spector or girl group hit -- at the Interscope party. Guests include Interscope CEO John Janick, vice chairman Steve Berman, publicity chief Dennis Dennehy, Republic’s Michele Anthony and Eminem manager Paul Rosenberg; Beats 1 anchor Zane Lowe, Apple global marketing head (and Billboard Women in Music star) Bozoma St. John and CAA head of music Rob Light. Actress Kathy Bates was in the house earlier in the evening, at least.
10:28 pm: Music producer David Foster gets dropped off at West Hollywood's Catch LA for Republic's Grammy afterparty... but rumored girlfriend Christie Brinkley (they were spotted on a handful of dates late last year) is nowhere in sight.
10:35 pm: Adele arrives at the Sony Music afterparty, held at the Bel Air Hotel, where she and manager Jonathan Dickins are toasted by Sony Entertainment chief Kaz Hurai, Sony Music CEO Doug Morris and Columbia Records chairman Rob Stringer (see photo at top).
10:45 pm: Word is that the Warner party is indeed shut down but the line hasn't dispersed. Music coming from inside sounds slamming. Might be Gallant (Kehlani and Spencer Ludwig are also on the bill).
10:55 pm: Beck is spotted hanging by a table at the Universal after-party looking dapper in a well-tailored shirt. Island Records president and CEO David Massey makes the rounds conversing with friends in the crowd while Alison Wonderland hops on the decks.
10:55 pm: John Mayer, manager Steve Moyer and Columbia Records EVP Joel Klaiman huddle at the Sony party.
11:01 pm: Desiigner is seen laughing with friends at the Universal party.
11:16 pm: The valet line outside GQ’s post-Grammys party at Chateau Marmont snakes down Sunset Boulevard all the way to the front of Liquor Locker. The party is already at capacity and the guest list line is not moving. Paparazzi are on high-alert waiting for notable guests who will have no problem getting in. They include Katy Perry, John Legend, Big Sean (who pulls up to the valet minutes later driving himself), Snoop Dogg, Quincy Jones, Don Cheadle, Daft Punk, Diplo, Maren Morris, Migos (who performs) and three-time Grammy winner Chance the Rapper. A black SUV mistakenly pumps the gas and skids toward a paparazzo who loses his mind and threatens to beat up the driver. Jessica Michele exits the vehicle without incident and goes inside where other guests are snacking on Jon & Vinny’s eats.
11:50 pm: At a house party held at producer Benny Blanco's in the Hollywood Hills, Ed Sheeran is heard telling friends that he got turned away from the Warner party due to capacity issues.
1:30 am: Red Light at the Mondrian is a party that's not too big for the space it was in and light on attitude (Grammy-winner Maren Morris was just chilling with friends at a table). But by this hour -- around 2 a.m. -- things were beginning to wind down. We’d long since switched from booze to water, and the inevitable sense that you weren’t going to find whatever it was you were looking for set in.
2:00 am: Dressed in a black tee and backwards hat, Diplo presides over the party at Benny Blanco's house in the Hollywood Hills. Justin Bieber, Halsey, Rae Sremmurd, Ty Dolla $ign, Cashmere Cat, Jillionaire, The Fat Jew, Jauz, Ookay, LA Riots and many more are seen in attendance.
