Since its inception, Black Women in Music has saluted specific artists and industry executives, including Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, Janelle Monae and Epic Records president Sylvia Rhone. The 2016 soiree comes with a different twist. In tandem with Essence’s “Black Girl Magic”-themed February issue -- featuring African-American women making inroads within social activism, arts, fashion, technology and other arenas -- the evening will herald this year’s field of Grammy-nominated black female artists.

Murray will also double as host of Black Women in Music. Joining Day and Sullivan onstage at the Avalon will be Adam Blackstone and the BBE All-Star Band. Music will be provided by DJ Rashida.
