Andra Day & Jazmine Sullivan to Salute Grammy Nominees at Essence Black Women in Music: Exclusive
Current Grammy Award nominees Andra Day and Jazmine Sullivan will headline the talent lineup at Essence magazine’s seventh annual Grammy Week celebration, Black Women in Music. The invitation-only fete will be held at Avalon Hollywood in Los Angeles on Thursday, Feb. 11.
Since its inception, Black Women in Music has saluted specific artists and industry executives, including Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, Janelle Monae and Epic Records president Sylvia Rhone. The 2016 soiree comes with a different twist. In tandem with Essence’s “Black Girl Magic”-themed February issue -- featuring African-American women making inroads within social activism, arts, fashion, technology and other arenas -- the evening will herald this year’s field of Grammy-nominated black female artists.
“There are so many amazing artists this past year across all musical genres,” Essence entertainment director Cori Murray tells Billboard. “What better way to celebrate all of this ‘Black Girl Magic’? Andra and Jazmine’s powerhouse artistry will help us celebrate their musical peers who are constantly dominating the music charts and changing the game.”
Murray will also double as host of Black Women in Music. Joining Day and Sullivan onstage at the Avalon will be Adam Blackstone and the BBE All-Star Band. Music will be provided by DJ Rashida.
