Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Phoenix and MGMT lead Goldenvoice's new aught-friendly festival in Long Beach
Is Goldenvoice's new Just Like Heaven fest your 2007 iTunes "playlist come to life" or merely a repeat of all the bands you were able to catch at 2013 Coachella when you got sick of hanging with your friends in the Sahara tent?
For Consequence of Sound founder Alex Young, the new Long Beach, Calif. festival is his pre-Barack Obama mp3 playlist, writing the MGMT, Beach House and Miike Snow led festival was a "who’s who of indie rock royalty from the early aughts." It was the late 2000s and torrent sharing and pirating sites like MegaUpload were changing the ways fans heard music and consumed music, paying much less and getting much more.
Fast forward to 2013 and bands like Phoenix, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Passion Pit and Grizzly Bear were performing and headlining Coachella. Somehow Goldenvoice's Paul Billings and his crew have been able to put that year's energy in a bottle for the one-day festival at Queen Mary Park, Saturday May 4. Last year Goldenvoice signed a booking deal with the famous cruiseliner's new owners Urban Commons to bring events to the site, launching festivals like the Erykah Badu and the Roots' Smoking Grooves festival and Summertime in the LBC with Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube.
