Diplo went virtual for a Major Lazer concert on Friday night (May 1), performing live on a festival-like digital stage in Fortnite's new Party Royale mode.

Unlike Fortnite's previous in-game concerts, where artists like Marshmello and Travis Scott performed as actual Fortnite-esque characters, Diplo's Major Lazer performance was a live stream video embedded in a virtual environment reminiscent of a large outdoor music festival.

Fortnite's new weapons-free Party Royale mode takes place on a small virtual island where gamers trade in fighting for hanging out and dancing. During Friday's event, players were able to equip their skins with Major Lazer gear from the game's store.

"First person to ever play live inside @fortnite at Party Royale," Diplo teased on Instagram before the show. "Easiest VIP access I'll ever be able to offer to a @majorlazer show."

Last week, Fortnite hosted its largest in-game gathering yet as 12.3 million concurrent players logged into the battle royale video game for Scott's Astronomical event.
