"In the past, when performing on the stages of my white male peers, I always felt like a visitor being one of the few Black women I could see," the English artist says of her new solo work.
Aluna has long delivered some of the slinkiest vocals in the dance world. Performing alongside George Reid as the electronic duo AluanGeorge, the English vocalist has lent her voice to tracks by dance elite including DJ Snake ("You Know You Like It"), Disclosure ("White Noise") and Jack Ü (To Ü).
Today (April 30), Aluna is stepping out on, and into, her own with her debut solo single "Body Pump." Dropping via Diplo's Mad Decent label, the song is a house cut with a singalong hook demonstrating the infectiousness of Aluna's voice and further establishing her as a dance world force for club hits and representation.
"Having enjoyed being the main ingredient to many successful dance records, I started wanting to create the whole dish," Aluna says in a statement. "In the past when performing on the stages of my white male peers, I always felt like a visitor being one of the few Black women I could see, so it never fully occurred to me to claim dance music as my music, as an artist, even though it was at the heart of my connection to music.
