Diplo Explains Why M.I.A.’s ‘Paper Planes’ Was One Of His Favorite Records to Produce

In the latest episode of My Billboard Moment, Diplo recalls how it felt when M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” – which he produced and co-wrote – hit No. 4 on the Hot 100 chart in 2008, calling it one of his favorite records he ever produced.

Diplo tells Billboard that the song, which became his first top 10 hit on the chart, was a very “revolutionary” record at the time of its release, and that they never anticipated that it would be a hit.

“It was buried in the album, barely made the album,” he reveals, adding that when the song got licensed to a few movie soundtracks, including Pineapple Express, it suddenly gained traction on the radio.

“We had this idea, cross over this unusual record on urban radio, and the record just blew up,” he adds of getting different remixes made of the track. “This is before the internet and TikTok generation, but I think it would've been a record that would've been in that circuit really well.”

Diplo adds that “Paper Planes” was one of his favorite records to produce, and that it even earned him a Grammy nomination for record of the year. He also notes that M.I.A. was one of his favorite collaborators of all time, and that he is so glad he was a part of the record.
