Damian Lazarus at Day Zero

After announcing its 2020 return to Tulum last month, Damian Lazarus’ Day Zero event is now sharing its lineup.

South African-gone-international house hero Black Coffee leads the talent roster, along with Berlin techno maven Ellen Allien and America’s own Dubfire. The remainder of the intimately sized lineup involves many familiar faces such as Art Department, Francesca Lombardo, Serge Devant and of course, Lazarus himself; but there are a few new Day Zero inductees, too, among them &ME, Audiofly and Luciano.

Day Zero Tulum is set to return to the Mexican jungle on Jan. 10, 2020, where it will celebrate its seventh year. Lazarus, who also heads the Crosstown Rebels record label, originally launched Day Zero in 2012 to coincide with the supposed end of the world (Dec. 21, 2012), as marked on the Mayan calendar. What was once an observance of an ending instead grew into an annual event through which attendees could take in the ancient culture, soundtracked by its artists’ distinctly mystical music.

A few weeks ago (Sept. 27), Lazarus expanded the event’s scope to Israel, where the first Day Zero Masada: Dwellers of the Dead Sea transpired at the base of an ancient palace complex built by King Herod in the last century B.C. Billboard Dance was there to witness firsthand magical moments like Lazarus’ sunrise set. Such future memories are surely in store come January.
