Billboard Dance Chart Upstarts: Mahalo X DLMT, Herve Pagez & Diplo, Dog Blood
Each week, Billboard Dance looks at songs & albums rising on Billboard's dance charts.
Mahalo X DLMT feat. Lily Denning, "So Cold"
Hawaii native and Los Angeles-based producer Mahalo (aka Nick Jay) and Toronto-based producer DLMT (real name Dan Balamut) soar 31-10 on Billboard's Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart (dated June 15) with "So Cold," featuring singer Lily Denning. It's the first Billboard top 10 for all three acts. "Cold" culls airplay on core-dance affiliates including KMVQ-HD2 San Francisco, SiriusXM's BPM and KNHC (C89.5) Seattle, according to Nielsen Music.
Mahalo and DLMT tell Billboard, "We met at Miami Music Week last year and hit it off over some Cuban food; a sound start to any relationship. We really dug each other's styles and wanted to make something that balances our two sounds to create something that resonates with people. For us, 'So Cold' was the perfect representation of that.
"The record is really about shutting yourself off from the standards in today's society and staying true to what you believe in. It's too easy to get caught up in the rat race of social media and what you are 'supposed to be doing.' according to everyone else, but it's more important than ever to shut out the noise and pursue your own purpose."
Herve Pagez & Diplo feat. Charli XCX, "Spicy"
"Spicy," by Guadeloupe native and Paris-based DJ Herve Pagez and Diplo and featuring Charli XCX, debuts at No. 18 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs. Pagez's first Billboard chart action, the track is Diplo's 28th entry on the ranking and Charli's fourth. The song, essentially a cover of Spice Girls' breakthrough smash "Wannabe" (No. 1 for four weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1997), scored 1.6 million U.S. streams and sold 2,000 downloads in the tracking week ending June 6. "Spicy" also adds its flavor to Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales No. 9, where Pagez likewise makes his inaugural appearance.
Dog Blood, Turn Off the Lights
Dog Blood, a collaboration between Boys Noize (Alex Ridha) and Skrillex (Sonny Moore), bounds onto Dance/Electronic Album Sales at No. 7 with EP Turn Off the Lights. The act's premier Billboard chart entry also begins on Heatseekers Albums at No. 21. Billed as Boys Noize, Ridha has hit Dance/Electronic Album Sales with three titles, including Mayday (No. 8, 2016), while Skrillex has scored five top 10s and three No. 1s, including EP Bangarang (No. 1 for 10 weeks in 2012).
