Mako Wanders in Dark Woods of Emotion in Animated 'Coyote' Video: Exclusive

Daniel Batalles

You never feel as alone and lost as you do with a head full of dark thoughts. Your friends and family want to help, but they don't undertand. You're a lone wolf, or in Mako's case, a solo "Coyote."

The Los Angeles-based producer is famous for his work writing theme songs for the popular video game series League of Legends. He co-wrote and co-produced the game's 2017 World Championship theme "Legends Never Die," and it was his voice that graced the Alan Walker remix. He returned in 2018 with The Glitch Mob to write the LOL Championship theme "Rise," but in 2019, he's up to something deeply personal. "Coyote" is the first single from a forthcoming full-length album, and it's guitar-driven melody and synthetic ambience turns his pop sensibility toward indie alternatives.

“I can’t imagine the song fitting easily into any existing box of music,” Mako tells Billboard Dance. “You’ve got the tenants of what makes my music mine, like orchestral and cinematic elements playing through it, my voice and my sensibility of songwriting, which is more pop-melodic, but with melancholic lyrics - but then the song just goes off into the woods for a while. I can’t properly describe what this track is in less than a monologue, but it’s probably one of the things I like most about it.”

"Coyote" is sensitive and alluring. Mako's voice is but a deep whisper raw with agony. The video's emotions come to life in an animated video with intriguing style, courtesy of Micah Chambers. The full album is due out in fall 2019 via Ultra Records. "Coyote" is out Friday, April 12, but you can watch the video clip in full below a day early, exclusively on Billboard Dance.
