RL Grime to Launch Sable Valley Label With Graves Collab 'Arcus'
So, you're a successful DJ and producer. You've dropped a hit album as an independent artist. You've sold out headline tours. Where do you go next? Well, in the case of RL Grime, you start a label so you, too, can help up-and-coming artists share their artistic voice with the world on their terms.
He's named his label Sable Valley, and it already isn't taking itself too seriously. The label has a sense of humor, treating itself like a sound recording and distribution institute of research, and asking those submitting songs to the label how many cups of water they drink a day.
"During your membership here at Sable Valley, we strive to provide you with the technical information, advocacy, and professional opportunities to help advance your overall well-being," the label states to Billboard Dance. "As a member, you will be able to exchange research information with other Sable Valley affiliates and participate in programming sessions offered at various conferences held by Sable Valley throughout the year."
The California-based producer self-released both his debut VOID and it's 2018 follow-up NOVA. He's learned a thing or two about how to run a release and promotion cycle. He's also highly-regarded as one of the most innovative producers on the scene by his peers. Diplo called RL Grime his "favorite taste maker," which looks good on a label head resume. Grime says it's something he's wanted to do since the start of the project.
“My Halloween mixes have always been an outlet for me to curate and showcase new music, but the natural next step for me was to start a label," he says. "My whole life I’ve been obsessed with the process of searching for and finding what’s next, and this is a way for me use my platform to highlight emerging talent that I believe in."
He launches the label with his anticipated graves collaboration "Arcus." The track debuted in his 2018 Halloween mix. It's as dark and grand as anything off his sophomore album, landing somewhere in the scope of "Reims" territory. It's set for release Wednesday, Feb. 6.
