GRiZ Talks 12 Days of GRiZmas, Charity & Upcoming Music

GRiZ kept fans waiting for more than a year for some new music, which ended with November's release of two singles, "It Gets Better" with DRAM and "Can't Get Enough," with the latter marking the Denver auteur's own vocal debut. But he promises there will be more where that came from -- and sooner.

"This last year has been a year of mass music creation and creative expression," GRiZ (nee Grant Kwiecinski) tells Billboard, "going into new territories, working with new people, creating new sounds, honoring old sounds, expanding on existing ideas and bringing new life to old ideas and building upon these staples of the GRiZ sound. I feel like the floodgates are almost full, so it's just about time to show people what we've been up to."

Details on those releases will be forthcoming, GRiZ adds.

"I'm not sure if we've got an album on our hands or mixtapes or EPs or singles," he notes, "but we definitely have a lot of new music coming."

In the meantime, GRiZ is back in his home town of Detroit for his fifth annual 12 Days of GRiZmas event, combining a variety of activities -- including parties, yoga, bowling and roller disco parties, a panel discussion at the city's Assemble Sound and more -- to raise money for music education for Detroit public school students. He's raised more than $80,000 during the four previous GRiZmas events, and this year he has a new beneficiary -- Seven Mile Music, an after-school program that provides music lessons and opportunities for more than 200 students per week.

"This is a big year of progress towards being able to do a lot of things we originally wanted to do," says GRiZ, who's finishing GRiZmas with two concerts -- a performance with his 15-piece live band on Dec. 14 and a DJ show on Dec. 15 at which he plans to premiere some of his unreleased new material. He also launched a new GRiZmas Blend coffee with the local Great Lakes Coffee Roasting company. "It's another building block to gain more visibility and gain some more legitimacy. We're trying to build a positive legacy for our brand and make this a staple for Detroit and the suburbs -- the entire city, not just for the fans. This year is about trying to expand beyond the GRiZ fan base and into the hearts and minds of people who are interested in charitable activities and donating their time, whether or not they're into the music."
