Mija's Turns Up the Disco On Nick Monaco's Dark 'River': Exclusive

Ryan Farber

Mija's remix of Nick Monaco's "River," premiering exclusively on Billboard Dance today (Oct. 17), puts a classic dance rhythm into its mood and turns it up with instrumental glitter. The song's sexy sax riffs and moaning guitar come under spotlight, luring you to dance to its heightened tempo.

Deep groove freak-master Nick Monaco has always been an eclectic spirit. On stage, the San Franciscan adopts an androgynous persona, and on record, he blurs lines between house, funk, R&B and sensual darkness. It's an emotive, experimental style not far from Mija's own sonic adventures, especially in light of the latter's languid and beautiful album How To Measure The Distance Between Lovers.

Monaco's most recent album Heroin Disco takes on the the complex, heartbreaking issue of America's opiate addiction, as well as dependence on phones and excess of all kinds. He uses dark disco to conjure visions of hedonism, though the track "River" runs smooth and demure.

Mija's remix of "River" is out everywhere Friday, Oct. 19, but you can listen to it in full below, one day early. If you crave more noir noise, be sure to check out Monaco's Heroin Disco in full, out now on UNISEX Records.
