Matoma Remixes Steve Aoki, AJR & Lil Yachty's 'Pretender' To Tropical Taste: Exclusive
There's a serious message behind the bouncing pop of Steve Aoki, AJR and Lil Yachty's song "Pretender." We're all out here on social media showing off our best sides, and some of us are giving our lives bigger face-lifts than others. We all want people to think we're happy and successful, even on the days when we feel anything but.
It's a message that resonated with Matoma too, because famous DJs are, at the end of the day, just like us fans. Aoki played "Pretender" for him during some conversations surrounding Aoki's remix of Matoma's "Lonely," and right from the first moment, Matoma knew he wanted to give it his own spin.
“I haven't done a remix in a while since I've been finishing my album," Matoma said in an emailed statement, "but I loved the chant-y melodies in the vocal and the story behind the song. I was traveling to some beautiful places and feeling really inspired and had this idea for a cruise-y, lazy but grooving vibe, which feels to me almost like 'modern tropical.'"
Matoma's coconut-flavored remix of "Pretender" should be enough to hold you over until he releases more originals. He released lead single "Slow," featuring Noah Cyrus, from his forthcoming sophomore LP in November. We know he's been hard at work, though there is yet to be an official release date for the album. His "Pretender" remix is out everywhere Friday, but you can catch its cool wave below, exclusively on Billboard Dance.
