Nick Cannon Talks DJing, Calls 'Only You' Song of the Summer: Watch

During Miami Music Week at SiriusXM's "House of Chill," Billboard Dance’s Matt Medved caught up with Nick Cannon, who spoke about his work as a DJ, remixing his track “Hold On” and what track he thinks is going to be the song of the summer.

“Man, I’ve been DJing since 1996,” Cannon tells Billboard. “But obviously probably more in the dance world, probably around like 2010/2011 when I really got to it and just understanding how dance works. It’s something that is always incorporated.”

“I’m a musician, too,” he continues, “It’s one of those things where if you feel the rhythm, you feel the vibe, you gonna know how to get to it.”

He also chats about his 2016 hit “Hold On,” explaining that when some people hear it, they don’t even know that it’s his record. “Those are, to me, the best dance records, when you can’t even really identify who the artist is,” he shares, “and other DJs and producers [who remixed it] get inspired by the mix and they make it their own, so that’s kind of what we did with the ‘Hold On’ record.”

Speaking of his latest single “Only You,” Cannon calls it the “song of the summer.” While on the subject of that track and its accompanying music video – which he shot in Miami – he also discusses the importance of videos and visual art as a DJ. “To be a well-rounded artist in today’s medium, you gotta make sure your visuals are tight, even as a DJ,” he shares. “What’s playing behind you as you spinning is just as important as what’s coming through the speakers.”
