Marshmello's manager Moe Shalizi leads Billboard's annual list of industry execs pushing dance & electronic music forward.
In a year when dance music continued its global expansion -- and the industry worked to close the gender gap -- music's elite ranks saw fresh faces emerge and veteran executives extend their influence.
Here is Billboard's annual Dance Power Players list of the top managers, live leaders and tastemakers who are driving the $7.4 billion global dance music industry, unranked and listed alphabetically after executive of the year.
The savvy shot-callers who helped their artists gain an audience in an ever-changing scene.
Moe Shalizi, 27 | Founder, The Shalizi Group
Billboard Dance’s 2018 Executive of the Year graces the cover of this year’s dance issue with Marshmello — the masked star whose brand has been his brainchild. Under Shalizi’s guidance, the anonymous artist has ascended the ranks of DJ royalty over the past year with sold-out shows and hits like “Wolves” with Selena Gomez (No. 20 on Hot 100) and “Silence” with Khalid (No. 30 on Hot 100). Shalizi's social media marketing savvy helped Marshmello build a highly engaged Instagram following more than six million strong and he recently launched a Cooking With Marshmello show on YouTube, where the artist is now averaging over 200 million monthly views. ”You just have to trust who you work with, and I trusted Moe,” says Marshmello of Shalizi. The Corona, Calif. native's roster also boasts promising talents like Jauz, who wrapped the successful Off the Deep End tour and launched his new Bite This! label, and Slushii, who just released “There x2,” featuring Marshmello on vocals.
Adam Alpert, 37 | CEO, Disruptor Records/Selector Songs
"We are always thinking two or three chess moves ahead." Alpert said of his partnership with The Chainsmokers in a 2017 Billboard interview, and that strategic thinking has paid off for crossover stars Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall. Under Alpert's guidance as manager and label boss, the duo toured blockbuster album Memories...Do Not Open with a full band and arena-ready production. Then, following a Grammy nomination for their collaboration with Coldplay, The Chainsmokers surprised fans with heartfelt singles "Sick Boy" and "You Owe Me."

Michael George, 28 | Artist manager, SB Projects
Braun and George have played an instrumental role in guiding the career of Martin Garrix, who continued his upward career trajectory with the early 2017 single "Scared To Be Lonely." Featuring Dua Lipa, the track hit No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 9 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, with more than five hundred million Spotify plays. Marquee client Justin Bieber was a featured performer on two No. 1 hits on the Hot 100, "I'm The One" and "Despacito," and David Guetta, who signed with SB Projects in early 2017, hit No. 16 on the Hot 100 with his single “2U" (also featuring Bieber), which also has racked up 454 million plays (and counting) on Spotify.

Deckstar's longtime management client Steve Aoki notched close to 250 shows last year, while also conjuring a No. 28 Billboard Hot 100 hit with his remix of BTS' "Mic Drop," featuring Desiigner, which helped the band become the first Korean group to have a song certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The DJ/producer then started 2018 with his first Spanish-language track "Azukita." The Los Angeles-based Colon and Vavra also represent The Glitch Mob and Deorro, while building a formidable rock roster that includes Bush and Blink-182.
Watse De Jong, 34 | Owner/Artist Manager, Watse Matter
Already an integral part of Martin Garrix's management team, De Jong's role has expanded over the past year. The Dutch native also co-runs (along with Steven Hiemstra) Garrix’s two-year-old label STMPD RCRDS, which released new albums in 2017 by CMC$, Todd Helder, and the Conro and Disero anthem "Like You Love Me." (That track has generated more than 2 million plays on Spotify.) De Jong also helped take over the famed FC Walvisch in Amsterdam — a popular recording spot for artists like Pharrell Williams and Lady Gaga — which is getting a facelift and will be renamed STMPD recording studios. He's also a senior advisor to GUTS, a blockchain ticket start-up that prohibits ticket fraud.
Adam Foley, 42 | Manager, Red Light Management
Foley describes his 2017 as "surreal," with two of the biggest names on his roster, ODESZA and Bonobo, achieving career milestones — hit records, sold-out concerts, and Grammy nominations — "all the while remaining independent artists," he says. ODESZA's A Moment Apart reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on Billboard's Top Dance/ Electronic Albums chart, and the Seattle duo sold out Los Angeles' STAPLES Center, Brooklyn's Barclays Center, and a three-night stand at The Greek Theater in Berkeley that moved 25,500-plus tickets. Bonobo's latest, the critically acclaimed Migration, reached No. 1 on Billboard's Top Dance/ Electronic Albums and No. 1 in the iTunes Electronic Albums chart in 50 countries.
Mark Gillespie, 35 and Dean Wilson, 47 | Co-founders, Three Six Zero Group
Three Six Zero's top dance/electronic client Calvin Harris dropped his star-studded fifth album, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and produced hits “Slide” (No.25 on Hot 100) and “Feels” (No. 20 on Hot 100). Meanwhile, deadmau5 took his Lots of Shows in a Row Tour across North America, making over 30 stops with his updated Cube stage show. In addition to celebrating the 10-year anniversary of his label, mau5trap, with a compilation, the masked producer announced forthcoming album, where's the drop?, featuring orchestral performances with composer Gregory Revert.

With McInnes and Brodeur in New York and Kusatsu and Palmacci in Los Angeles, the firm's recent highlight reel includes Diplo's Mad Decent Block Party in Islamabad, Pakistan, Dillon Francis recording a Spanish-language album, and TMWRK comrades Major Lazer and Cashmere Cat linking up with Tory Lanez on "Miss You." Not to mention the Sundance premiere of Major Lazer's much-anticipated Give Me Future documentary chronicling their historic March 2016 concert in Havana, Cuba.
Stephanie Lafera, 38 | CEO/Owner, Little Empire Music
The Los Angeles-based management company, which LaFera founded a decade ago, turned in a memorable 2017. There was the continued success of longtime clients Galantis — whose sophomore album The Aviary climbed to No. 6 on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart, climbed almost half way up the Billboard 200 to No. 102, and generated over a billion total streams in its debut week. Little Empire's roster also grew bigger with new signings Santigold, The Presets, Fischerspooner, Justin Jay, Manatee Commune, and Underher.

The Los Angeles-based brothers added Swedish DJ/producer Alesso and Brazilian star Anitta to a growing roster of digital creators that includes YouTube stars Lele Pons, Rudy Mancuso and Hannah Stocking. According to John, Shots Studios' millennial-targeting videos collectively “average roughly 50 million minutes daily” on YouTube, with a peak of 432 million minutes watched the week of Dec. 18, 2017.
Myles Shear, 25 | Founder, Golden Hare Group
Shear’s top client Kygo earned his first Hot 100 top 10 hit in 2017 with the Selena Gomez collaboration, “It Ain’t Me,” and topped the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart with his sophomore full-length Kids in Love. In addition to planning Kygo’s 22-date world tour, Shear began working with Baby Driver film star Ansel Elgort to help develop his music career.
Tim Smith, 42 | Founder/CEO, Blood Company
Smith's company represents some of the dance world's most creative and internet-savvy artists, including Skrillex, Mija and BloodPop®. Star client Zedd had a triumphant year: "Stay," featuring Alessia Cara, spent 31 weeks on the Hot 100, and "The Middle," with Maren Morris and Grey, landed in a Target commercial and climbed to No. 6 on the Hot 100 chart dated March 24. Smith also started the No Fine Print Wine Co. with Chance The Rapper's manager Pat Corcoran.
Amy Thomson, 43 | CEO, ATM Artists
Thomson, the savvy manager who spearheaded Swedish House Mafia's much-anticipated reunion at Ultra Music Festival this year following a five-year hiatus, also added DJ Snake to her select roster in 2017. The new partnership resulted in Snake's Beats By Dre campaign and a high-concept single launch atop Paris' Arc de Triomphe. Meanwhile, Thomson allies Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell launched a clothing line with designer Francesco Ragazzi and compiled their Axwell & Ingrosso singles into an album, More Than You Know, which fans could customize using Spotify's Application Programming Interface.

Macquarie Clark, 36 and Hunter Williams, 39 | Agents, Creative Artists Agency
Clark and Williams have been a driving force in nearly doubling CAA’s growth in the electronic dance space since 2016. They booked The Chainsmokers’ 40-date tour in North America, Asia, and Australia selling more than 2 million tickets worldwide. Williams is leading GRiZ’s record-breaking year from CAA’s Nashville office, booking the DJ/producer’s first-ever live band show and two sell-outs at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver. Another of his acts, Cheat Codes, also had a breakthrough year while veterans STS9 continue to headline big festivals including this year’s Bonnaroo. In addition to representing festival mainstays Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Nicky Romero, Clark began working with star rapper Logic, whose Bobby Tarantino II mixtape debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this month.

Cordova's savvy bookings have maintained Wynn's edge in the ever-competitive Las Vegas market. Cordova has also locked residencies from Solomun, Jamie Jones and Black Coffee, whose refined house and techno is a bold gamble for the Strip.

Circle also signed Kaskade and booked Excision’s 2017 Paradox tour, selling out 95 percent of the 60-stop run, which included his own sold-out music festival Lost Lands that drew more than 27,000 fans to its Ohio debut.

In 2017, Richards, who performs as Destructo, formed All My Friends, a Los Angeles-based concert and promotion company behind The Friendship, his first sea-bound festival -- which sails from Miami to CocoCay, Bahamas -- since Holy Ship. Friendship sold out before the lineup was announced.
Pasquale Rotella, 43 | Founder/CEO, Insomniac Events
Insomniac expanded to another international market in 2018 with the launch of EDC China, which is scheduled for April 29 and 30 at Shanghai Music Park. (Rotella is also bringing EDC back to Japan in May.) In 2017, Insomniac paired with C3 to launch the medieval-themed Middlelands festival in West Texas, and while the event won’t return in 2018, it was one of the highest grossing EDM events in the state. The year also saw Rotella settle a lawsuit with Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum that dated back to 2010's Electric Daisy Carnival and take control of Holy Ship and HARD following Gary Richards' move to LiveStyle.

TAO has also announced it will be opening Vandal Restaurant & Lounge alongside the largest dayclub/nightclub in the U.S. at the new Palms resort in Las Vegas in early 2019, plus unveiled three new food concepts within Moxy Times Square hotel in New York.

Kygo also had a powerful year, with 44 shows including stops at Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas and Ultra in Japan, as well as the Kids in Love tour which wrapped with a sold-out concert at London's O2 Arena. Andre Benz, 21 | Founder/CEO of The Nations
At age 21, Andre Benz is this year's youngest Billboard Dance Power Player. He's built a serious following with his YouTube curation channel network, The Nations, which currently stands at more than 25 million total subscribers. His primary channel, Trap Nation, has played a pivotal role in developing up-and-comers in the dance music space and has expanded its brand to Spotify, where nearly two million fans follow its playlist. The Nations have thrown events at SXSW, ADE, EDC Las Vegas and have more teed up for 2018.
Blake Coppelson, 24 | Founder/CEO of Proximity
The digital age has proven to be a golden age for Blake Coppelson, the founder of curation channel and digital label, Proximity. In 2017 alone, the YouTube channel hauled in 1.5 billion views, surpassed six million subscribers, and produced a series of events with Hakkasan Group, the worldwide hospitality company that's home to Vegas residents like Calvin Harris, Tiësto and Martin Garrix. Coppelson also capitalized on Proximity's brand value by launching a record label under Interscope/Geffen Records.
Josh Carr-Hilton, 32 | CEO/founder of The District
Dance music fans who've ever searched a track on YouTube have likely come across a video under The District umbrella, the largest network of independent dance music curators. Founded by Josh Carr-Hilton, The District's brands total more than 85 million subscribers and 1.5 billion monthly streams, working with some of the platform's fastest growing channels such as Trap Nation, MrSuicideSheep and Proximity.
Mike Darlington, 28 | Co-founder & CEO of Monstercat
Independent dance music label Monstercat has bred a cult fanbase and community over the past six years, with Mike Darlington and his team leading the charge. The imprint's most notable release to date is Marshmello's 2017 breakout single, "Alone," which went platinum with more than 1 billion total streams and served as the springboard for his Hot 100 hits with Selena Gomez, Khalid and Logic.
Maykel Piron, 43 | CEO/co-founder of Armada Music
Founded in 2003, Armada Music has plenty to celebrate on its 15th anniversary with Piron at the helm. The independent label boasts 200 million monthly streams on Spotify and earns 40 million YouTube views per week. In a rapidly evolving sonic landscape, Armada has been able to successfully adapt and stay ahead of the curve with dance releases by Lost Frequencies, Loud Luxury and co-founder Armin van Buuren. Van Buuren's 2017 release, "Sunny Days," spent 20 weeks on Billboard's Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart.

As SiriusXM's longstanding dance guru, Jonathan ‘Geronimo’ Broth continued to seek out new sounds in 2017. The native New Yorker is also an on-air host, with his Top 20 Beats Of The Week show on BPM throwing support behind emerging stars including Phantoms, Bonnie X Clyde and Zack Martino. Under his watch, Diplo launched his own radio channel, Diplo’s Revolution, exclusively on SiriusXM this month.
Neil Jacobson, 40 | President, Geffen Records
A year into the gig, Jacobson has a lot to be proud of. He played a key role in Avicii's triumphant 2017 comeback. Releasing Avīci (01), an EP of his first new music since 2015, the Swedish DJ-producer debuted at No. 3 on Top Dance/Electronic Albums. Under Jacobson's leadership, Geffen act Mura Masa earned two Grammy nominations with his self-titled debut LP; DJ-producer Gryffin chalked up 100 million streams, and both DJ Snake and Lil Jon logged stellar years. In 2018, Jacobson will launch two new label signings, DEVAULT and Craves, as well as the Geffen Remix Project: hard-bass remixes of the label's classic grunge rock records from the 1990s and 2000s.

Spotify's dance music curator rebranded the streaming platform's popular electroNOW playlist as mint in August 2017, launching with a four-track visual EP from ZHU. With 4.8 million subscribers, Kramer says mint is dedicated to “a multitude of electronic styles, genres and moods.” Eager to stay on the pulse, the tastemaker also encourages Spotify track submissions via a public Google form.

Tong made waves in 2017 when he teamed with The Heritage Orchestra for his Classic House LP, which hit No. 1 on the U.K. albums chart, and worldwide Ibiza Classics tour, featuring stops at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl and a sell-out show at London's O2 Arena. Mac, likewise, released 36 tracks through her Annie Mac Presents platform and continued breaking new sounds with her picks for Hottest Record in the World.

Moxey and Waxman remain genre trailblazers, with a roster of superstars that includes Kygo — “It Ain't Me” rose to No. 10 on the Hot 100 — as well as indie-leaning acts Great Good Fine Ok, Haux, and Salt Cathedral. Moxey says he’s especially proud of breaking new artists, such as New York duo Sofi Tukker, who had their first top five hit on Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, and a year that brought Ultra acts “twelve Platinum and thirteen Gold RIAA certifications in the U.S. alone.” He also relaunched Payday Records, the hip-hop label he created in 1995 (which discovered future icons like Jay Z and Mos Def, among others), and celebrated its 25th anniversary with a new DJ Premier track “Our Streets” featuring A$AP Ferg, which scored 2.3 million views on YouTube.

Since relaunching Casablanca as an electronic music imprint of Republic Records in 2012, Stevenson, Alperowitz and their team “have worked tirelessly to recapture the groundbreaking and irreverent attitude of the storied label,” says Stevenson, adding, “We now have it in our sights.” 2017 was especially good for Casablanca, with high-water marks like Phantoms' “Just A Feeling,” which peaked at No. 10 on Billboard's Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart, Tiësto’s “Carry You Home,” with over 40 million streams on Spotify, and breakout artist ALMA, whose singles “Chasing Highs" and “Phases" garnered over 97 million combined Spotify plays. “It was a pivotal year,” says Alperowitz; one that included new partnerships with the ALT:Vision label, urban streetwear designer Supreme, and (never losing sight of Casablanca's disco-era past) the upcoming Broadway musical Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, which begins previews on March 28.

Turner wears many hats in the industry — co-founder of the nonprofit Association for Electronic Music (AFEM), co-founder of the annual International Music Summit in Ibiza, Spain, and manager of techno veteran Richie Hawtin. Under his watch, AFEM launched a global confidential hotline for reporting incidents of sexual misconduct and announced plans to double the number of women on its advisory boards by the end of 2020.

After turning down an offer to VJ for Amsterdam's MTV, the Holland-born Woldring founded her own electronic music publicity firm in 2010, and has guided Martin Garrix's career from the beginning, leading to a huge 2017 for the superstar DJ, who charted two singles, "Scared To Be Lonely" and "There For You," on the Hot 100.
