Nightmares on Wax's 'Shape The Future' Tour Goes Strawless With Oceanic: Exclusive
We all know about our "carbon footprint" and how everything from our use of fossil fuels to our meat consumption plays a role in greenhouse gases, and we all know that plastics can never biodegrade and clog our landfills and oceans with a detrimental amount of debris.
Maybe you've stepped up your veggie game and are an avid recycler, but non-profit organization Oceanic Global and U.K. house producer and DJ Nightmares on Wax wants you to take one more step, and all you have to do is step away from the straw.
In the United States alone, people use and discard an average of 500 million plastic straws a day. That adds a lot to the average 30 million tons of plastic trash a year. It's wild when you consider how non-essential the straw actually is in our lives. You have a mouth, after all. To prove just how non-essential the straw is in our lives, Nightmares on Wax teamed with Oceanic Global to take his forthcoming Shape The Future tour absolutely strawless.
"Plastic plays a big part in shows and in nightlife, which I’m heavily a part of," Nightmares on Wax says in an emailed statement. "I think it is important to bring that awareness into the arena that I’m working in, because I didn’t know about this stuff 'till someone brought it to my attention. I think this is a perfect platform to share that awareness with other people and let other people get involved."
Oceanic started in Ibiza, shining a spotlight on how dance music's positive community can help steer the green conversation toward a more healthy ecological future. Last summer, it teamed with Solomun to put on a charity festival on the White Isle, simultaneously educating party-goers on the impact their actions has on life under the sea and how that impact in turn impacts our own ecological health. in 2018, Nightmares on Wax has joined the group as an ambassador to give its message more worldwide reach.
"I was approached by the founder of Oceanic in Ibiza last year, because she wanted to get involved with Wax da Jam for an event," he says. "I told her about an organization I was already a part of, Last Night A DJ Saved My Life Foundation, and she told me what Oceanic was about. We both really resonated with each other. We both had the same concerns and passions about the planet."
The message resonates well with the producer's latest album, Shape The Future, which internalizes these concepts of humanity's impact and channels those feelings in a positive direction. "I come to (the concept) of shaping the future on a conscious level, of having that conversation of how we want to see the world in the future," he says. "It really is up to us as individuals. Oceanic is an organization, but it is nothing without individuals getting involved. Shaping the future to me is the same principle, it is down to individuals."
There's no better time to strike up conversation than now, especially as Nightmares on Wax radiates with optimism. He just wrapped a sold-out UK tour and embarks on more sold-out events throughout Europe. He's gotten a great response from fans on the album so far, and he's excited to bring this good feelings with him to the United States, where he can educate and entertain a population who has the power to set a standard the world will notice.
"You start with making the album and then the story evolves with deconstructing the album, to making a live show out of it, and then is releasing it and taking it on the road," he says. "There all kinds of different phases of the creative process. It starts out really close and then you start to share it and then it goes out into the public and becomes something else which is really exciting. You can have something you want to express but it almost has to go on a journey before it comes back to you."
