Cooler weather just may be the operative terminology. Recent years have seen a handful of deaths at the June festival, caused by a combination of dehydration and MDMA intoxication. The festival takes place during the night hours, but long waits for shuttles in the hot desert sun have been linked to the very few but nonetheless unfortunate and important deaths of attendees.
An earlier date in the year could help bring an end to such situations, as well as other important changes EDC Las Vegas is making in 2018, including on-site air-conditioned campers, available for rent by ticket buyers. Available campgrounds would mean quicker and cooler shelter for festival goers, as well as less congestion on exit highways and therefor shorter wait times for shuttles back to Las Vegas hotels.
"Every year, we inevitably experience congestion on the roads around the Speedway, since thousands of fans drive to and from the festival around the same hours," Rotella says. "As we head into EDC Las Vegas 2018, the construction will be finished on the highway leading up to the Speedway, opening up three lanes and a pull-off area. Traffic will also be completely eliminated for campers, and we’re opening gates early so Headliners can enter before the festival starts for (the) special opening ceremony at cosmicMEADOW.”
General admission campers will be decked out with amenities ranging from dust-control canvas walls to artificial grass and electric outlets for up to six friends. Premier tents will include twin or queen-sized beds, linens, pillows, towels, tables, chairs, and lights for up to four guests. RV parking will be available for those willing to drive their own hangs, and RVs will be available to rent, fully set up and ready to go.
“I have always envisioned a scenario where Headliners can camp right next to the festival,” said Pasquale Rotella, Founder and CEO of Insomniac. “With the weather being cooler in May, we’re finally able to make this a reality. Campers will have the option to drive in their own RVs or rent one from Insomniac. We’ll also be offering tents fully equipped with amenities. There will be a central campground area where Headliners can connect with one another, participate in activities, enjoy food trucks and cold beverages, relax in the shade, and have access to basic necessities. I’m so excited to create a community of campers within the festival next year.”
Oh, and Rotella gets one cool personal perk to share with the crowd.
"I love being a dad,” he says. “Celebrating Father’s Day before or after the actual date has been a bummer. Now with this date change, all EDC attendees can be around their families on Father’s Day. I'm also excited I get to enjoy quality time with my kids on this special date.”
