Giraffage Announces Debut Album, Shares Fizzy Lead Single 'Slowly': Premiere

Holy Mountain

You know when you listen to a single and you can just tell the album is gonna be great? That's the kind of vibe Giraffage's “Slowly” presents. It's the lead single from his debut album, Too Real, and it's sounds decidedly like Giraffage, but somehow better.

The track has all the best parts of a Giraffage song; shiny happy synths, chopped and filtered vocals, a stunning groove, glittering '90s aesthetics. But something about this sounds more mature. It's like everything up to now – all the retro pop and R&B remixes, the No Reason EP, the tour with Porter Robinson, “Bring Me Your Love” – was a methodical warm-up to the project that will encapsulate his sound and his journey, and come to represent who Giraffage the artist really is.

Maybe “Slowly” sounds more compelling because, at the end of the day, it's personal.

“‘Slowly' was one of the first songs I wrote for the new album,” Giraffage says in a press release. “I spent a lot of time writing and scrapping various other songs (and) ideas, but ‘Slowly' was the first one to click, and in turn, it helped inform the rest of the album. This is the first time I’ve worked extensively with vocalists, and I think that collaborative aspect led to some of the best music I’ve ever written. This album was written from 2015 - 2017 during a dark period of my life. So finally finishing it was a rather cathartic experience, and I’m excited for what the future may hold.”

From pain comes brilliant pop sounds. Smart lyrics and catchy vocals come courtesy of Matosic. Even the way “Slowly” intrigues me. It slows and fades from this bright poppy melody into something kind of corrupt, and you can tell it bleeds right into the next track, but we'll have to wait for the full album release to see where the story goes.

Too Real drops Friday, Oct. 20, on Counter Records. He's already got a super-fun Geocities-style throwback website for it, with scrolling text and dancing monkey gifs and everything. He's heading out on tour in support of the album beginning Wednesday, Oct. 25, and tickets are on sale Friday, Aug. 4.
