Camila Cabello Almost Sang The Chainsmokers' 'Closer,' Shares Demo: Watch
If there was a more iconic song of summer '16 than The Chainsmokers' “Closer,” we didn't hear it. That tune is so embedded into our psyche, it hurts. That's why it's so weird to hear Camila Cabello singing the familiar hook Halsey champions so hard in memory, but that's what our ears got via the Elvis Duran Morning Show, of which you can watch a clip below.
Turns out Cabello originally recorded the song with the guys when they were putting Memories: Do Not Open together in the studio. They offered her the part in the final, but it just wasn't in the cards.
“I loved the song,” she tells Duran,” but I had to turn it down because I was with the group at the time, and we were about to put an album out. I always tried to do my solo stuff off cycle, so that was super on, and so I had to say no, and then that was the number one song in the world.”
A missed opportunity for a hit, perhaps, but Cabello has had a lot of success working with other producers, including Cashmere Cat and Major Lazer.
Billboard Dance has reached out to The Chainsmokers' camp for comment. Watch the clip and hear the Cabello-graced demo – or at least a few seconds of it – below.
