For a dude who goes by Pretty Lights, Derek Smith has pretty much gone dark.

Since he released 2013's A Color Map of the Sun, Smith moved from his native Colorado (a music scene he helped put on the map with his heady, genre-bending electronic productions) and threw a festival in May of 2016, but new music has been few and far between.

Turns out he was running from the strangeness of fame and found a lot of hope and inspiration in New Orleans. He recently spoke with the Denver Post about it, and most excitedly, he told them about a new album to be released in 2017.

“I’m trying to make a film and a record that’s really about the connection of people,” he told the Denver Post, “the amazing things that happen between people on the same frequency. It will be an episodic thing that makes a full piece. Every song has an episode.”

No date or title has yet been announced for the new project.
