deadmau5 Shows Off Hip-Hop Skills on New Shotty Horroh Collab 'Okay': Listen
deadmau5, who took to Twitter this week to complain about his own forthcoming album, just shared a hip-hop track graced by rapper Manchester grime MC Shotty Horroh. Grime is usually pretty, er, grimy, and deadmau5 is usually pretty on edge with the synths and all meandering with the beat. These were the things swirling in my mind as I pressed play.
All of a sudden, I hear this dreamy, vinyl-popping “dee, dee, dee, dee, doo” like the soundtrack to an early 1960s claymation family Christmas. Then the headbangin' beat drops, not meandering at all, and the synths are somehow subdued under Holloh's cool, calm, and calamitous delivery. But when Holloh takes a break, you hear the signature deadmau5 sound clawing through in that counter melody.
If you'd had played this track without telling me it was deadmau5, I would have wanted to know immediately. The star power was not necessary, and it's got me real excited to see what other surprises deadmau5 has in store for 2017.
