Fatboy Slim Announces Freewheeling Beats 1 Radio Show: Exclusive
In all his 53 years, Fatboy Slim has never hosted a radio show before. That is, until now with his new two-hour program on Beats 1, premiering tonight at 6 pm EST / 3 pm PST.
“I’ve never done a residency in Ibiza until this year and everybody else equally said, well why have you never actually never done a residency?' the colorful British DJ and producer says to Beats 1 host Zane Lowe. “If I’m honest, I’d go with anyone, I’d never get in bed with them I just kinda do my stuff for them and go. So I wasn’t allowed to say 'whore' on the radio I take it. I’ve just been whoring myself out. You're the first person to make an honest woman of me.”
The premise of the show is quite unique. Beats 1 hands over the reins for two hours, and Fatboy takes the audience on an epic musical journey sans road map. He chooses a song to start with and he predetermines a song with which to end, but all those bits in between? He has no idea until it happens.
“That’s the bit I’m looking forward to,” Fatboy explains to Lowe. “Not the idea that you’re trying to mold me into some radio DJ. My idea is for two hours every fortnight I can go on this kind of musical journey and probably go to places much further than I can go because you’re not trying to hold a dance floor. So it’s an exciting unknown journey. I’m really looking forward to you making an honest DJ out of me.”
The mix mastery is immediately apparent as he spends literally four measures playing “Praise You” before live mixing it into “Sympathy for the Devil” in a manner so perfect, it should shame the entire main stage of most major music festivals. The journey continues from there in a funnky, rising motion perfect for sun-drenched weekends or drab work hours in desperate need of enlivening. Some tracks are new. Some are old. Some are available for your downloading or purchasing pleasure. Some will never see release, and we're just lucky Fatboy's got his Slim hands on them at all.
Catch the program on Beats 1 tonight or listen in to the encore Sunday, Sept. 11, at 6 am EST / 3 am PST.
