Carl Cox Planning Final Show As Ibiza's Space Closes Down... For Now
Talk in the streets is heated about the future of Ibiza. The mythical party island in the Mediterranean Sea has come under fire from Spanish authorities. The owners of renowned club Amnesia were arrested for tax fraud while the venues Space and Privilege were raided in an unrelated tax evasion investigation. It's since been announced that Space will close in about a month, its bones re-inhabited by Ibiza's Ushuaia, but that doesn't mean it will be the same.
For one thing, Carl Cox won't be there. He's held down a residency at Space for 25 years, but as he told Ticketmaster, “there is only one Pepe Rosello," and when his friend, the founder and owner of Space Ibiza, leaves, he leaves with him.
The silver lining? Space plans to reopen in a new location – eventually.
“It won’t happen for at least two years, and will it be the same?” Cox tells Ticketmaster. “We don’t know. I don’t know whether I will be involved because there are so many variables.”
Cox can't believe the clock is ticking. He's got a few special things planned for the final show in a few weeks.
“I do have a pile of records for the closing records," he tells Ticketmaster, "but what’s going to happen is, say we are going to finish at midday, as soon as they say ‘this is going to be the last record, Carl,’ it isn’t going to be the last record as they are going to want another record and another record. It could be the defining track but it might not be. But whatever I play, they are all going to be tear jerkers.”
It's the end of a definite era, but Cox is hopeful for his own future.
“I am quite looking forward to getting three days a week of my life back,” Cox tells Ticketmaster. “I feel like I am ready to kick back a little bit and enjoy the fruits of my labor. Perhaps I might be able to have a girlfriend at long last … I’ve never been in this position before.”
