“You can listen to this shit at the club, and then go rob a bank afterwards.”

Listen to Masked Artist Malaa's Throwback House Single 'H+M': Exclusive Premiere

That's how the mysterious Malaa intros his debut EP Illicit, and it's all “Diamonds” and “Danger” from there. It's four tracks of deep, dark hip-house that smacks you in the face with the butt of a bass-gun and holds you hostage on the dance floor. The cover art shows a woman regarding the Mona Lisa in a ski mask, as if to say “all art is gangsta,” which is way cooler than what they taught you about Renaissance paintings in high school.

Fans keeping score at home already know “Diamonds” as teased by Malaa, DJ Snake, and Tchami as early as March's Miami Music Week. If you like that track's tropically wonky style, it'll be easy to fall in love with the similarly fresh “Frequency 75.” Things only get darker as “Danger” rounds out the collection with the nastiest and wobbliest noises of all.

This is music to get down and dirty to. It bangs at the basement party or in the get-away car, just as Malaa promises. We may not be able to identify the masked man, but if he keeps cookin' up hits this tasty, he's welcome to run up on dem eardrums any time.

Malaa's Illicit EP is now available via iTunes and Spotify as well.
