Watch Tiësto Trick EDC Las Vegas Attendees Into Thinking He's Marshmello

Marshmello performs during the 20th annual Electric Daisy Carnival at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on June 19, 2016 in Las Vegas.

Since he emerged in 2015, the producer Marshmello has worked to keep his identity a secret, performing with a helmet that approximates a cylindrical lampshade with holes for eyes and mouth. Hiding your identity is a tried and true method of gaining attention.

Marshmello’s was aided in his buzz-building efforts by his big-name friends. He received a coveted co-sign from Skrillex, was spotted hanging out with Jauz, and his debut video featured cameos from Dillon Francis, Borgore, Getter, Mija, and more.

Another major DJ came to his aid last weekend during EDC Las Vegas: at the end of the set, the masked man removed his helmet, but it turned out to be Tiesto, who was sporting a large grin -- because he is not in fact Marshmello. In addition to a plethora of conflicting tour dates, Dancing Astronaut found a photo of the two helmeted DJs hanging out together pre-show.

Predictably, this elicited a scornful response from deadmau5. “Okay so, the biggest ‘news item’ from edc is some piece of shit taking off a helmet to reveal another piece of shit,” he wrote on Twitter. “Hey, it’s your money.”

Tiesto seemed excited by the joke. “I had so much fun last night,” he wrote on Instagram. Marshmello also appeared to be having a blast, judging from his Instagram, which shows photos of the mystery producer with the likes of Skrillex and John Legend. One picture shows him eye to eye with Martin Garrix. “Staring contest with @martingarrix,” the producer wrote. “He didn't stand a chance cuz my face never changes.”
