Martin Garrix Talks 'In The Name of Love' & Hanging With Justin Bieber: Exclusive
Guess who's back on the Billboard Hot 100?
Recently named to Billboard's 21 Under 21 list for the third year running, Martin Garrix is coming off a summer filled with headlining festival performances and new music releases, including "Lions in the Wild" with Third Party and "Oops" in partnership with YouTube and E3.
The young Dutch dance star's latest single "In the Name of Love" feat. Bebe Rexha has climbed to No. 49 on the Hot 100, marking his first return to the chart since breakthrough hit "Animals" peaked at No. 21 two years ago.
How did you and Bebe Rexha end up working together?
It all went organically. I just love Bebe’s voice and she’s a great songwriter too. So when we got the chance to sit down in the studio in LA, we both went all in and were able to share our creativity. I just feel lucky that we got to work together, and I’m pretty proud of the end result.
"In the Name of Love" sounds inspired by future bass. What was your creative approach on the track?
I always try to evolve my sound -- innovate, improve, be different but still Martin Garrix. It all starts with an idea in my head, which I work on until it starts to shape itself into a track. I get my inspiration for new music from all sorts of things -- with this track I tried to create something a bit different from the pre-existing Garrix sound.
How did the “Oops” release with YouTube and E3 come together?
I've always loved video games, so we've been looking for opportunities to collaborate more with the gaming community. Last year I connected with Geoff Keighley and we bonded over our mutual love for tech, electronics, and gaming. That's when we started making plans and talking about E3. Once we knew what we wanted to do it -- writing and releasing a new Martin Garrix track as the theme for YouTube and E3 -- It all came together very quickly. This is just the beginning, definitely more gaming projects to come!
What are you listening to right now?
Right now I’m really into Flume’s new album, there are a lot of great tracks on there. I love Troyboi - his sound is so fresh. If you want to stay updated and listen to the tracks that I listen to, you can follow my 'The Martin Garrix Show' playlist on Spotify, which is a weekly selection of my favorite tracks at that moment.
What else are you working on right now? Any update on collaborating with Bieber?
We’re just finishing up my album, so expect loads of new music! I’m also working in the studio with some artists from my label STMPD RCRDS, experimenting and trying out new stuff. Just having fun actually.
No update on any music with Justin though... we’re really good friends and we have a great time hanging out. Honestly we've been having so much fun hanging that we haven't gotten too much time in the studio in just yet.
