Cash Cash

Nelly lodged a simple line in the cultural memory bank when “Ride Wit Me” appeared on his Country Grammar album in 2000. The track became a crossover hit, peaking at No. 3 on the Hot 100, and chants of “hey, it must be the money” reverberated around the world.

Jean Paul Makhlouf, Alex Makhlouf and Samuel Frisch, who record as Cash Cash, appreciate the line, and they show their admiration on their latest track, “Millionaire.” The song is a collaboration with Digital Farm Animals, and Nelly shows up to rap a self-referential verse, putting “Millionaire” in the same class as other recent songs that encourage listeners to reminisce – take Diplo and Sleepy Tom’s “Be Right There” or Tory Lanez’s “Say It,” both of which pull energy from references to past hits.

“Working with Nelly on ‘Millionaire’ was one of the best experiences we’ve had yet,” Cash Cash’s JP Makhlouf tells Billboard via email. “His energy is on another level. He literally lit up the whole room in more ways than one. We got in the zone right away and ended up recording till like 5am the first night…It also got super nostalgic when we threw homage to the line, ‘Hey, must be the money.’ After the first listen back we knew we tapped into something fresh that will take people by surprise.”
