Martin Vogt embodies the next generation of exciting electronic music talent. Forward-thinking, yet conscious of the past, his work as Haywyre is both innovative and tasteful.

Vogt’s newest offering is Two Fold Pt. 2, which arrived on Monday (Feb. 8) as the latter half of his concept album, Two Fold. The series began in 2014 with Two Fold Pt. 1, which saw the young producer put out the first-ever album on burgeoning independent platform Monstercat. In the time since, Vogt has evolved into a reputable force in the scene, touring with everyone from Zedd to Gramatik.

The Monstercat Label Model: From YouTube Channel to One Million Record Sales

His latest album for Monstercat finds him charting similar territory to the first time around, exploring the dialectic between classical music and modern dance. For Vogt, this kind of contrast is at the very heart of his work: “the interplay between opposites has long been a favorite for philosophers, and it quickly turned into one of my biggest interests,” he says. “It wasn’t before long that I realized that I wanted to create a significant body of work representative of these concepts.”

It’s a conspicuous theme throughout the album, from the structure of the tracklist to the design of the songs themselves. The record kicks off with “I Am Me,” for instance, a beat-less, rock-inspired instrumental that soon gives way to the contemporary future bass flavor of “I Am You.” From there, it’s a spontaneous medley of styles, from the ambient interludes of “Restraint” and “Transient” to the disco-inspired groove of “Memory.”

When crafting the album, Haywyre was further inspired by artists such as Porter Robinson and Flying Lotus, as well as more obscure influences like Fritjof Capras’ The Tao Of Physics. “This book was the main source for the idea behind the second album installment,” he says.

Outside of the release, Haywyre has been busy on the road with Zedd aboard the True Colors world tour. His new video recap, which Billboard Dance is premiering, documents his travels in Japan while doubling as a music video for album single  “I Am You.” The video showcases Vogt meeting fans at Shin-Osaka Station, as well as performing before Zedd in a massive ballroom.

Haywyre says of the tour: “One of my goals for the next year is to focus heavily on bridging the gap between the production and the performance of my music. I’d like to imagine that I would find a way to build my sets and music in general around my love for keyboard improvisation without losing fidelity. Hopefully, through the Two Fold Pt. 2 tour, I will come closer to realizing this goal.”

Haywyre’s new album Two Fold Pt. 2 is out now on Monstercat. The album is also available for free via BitTorrent.
