Country duo Lady Antebellum and progressive house artist Audien may have been viewed as an unlikely pairing prior to this summer, but when their collaboration, "Something Better," hit digital retailers in July, the music simply spoke for itself.

Audien & Lady Antebellum No. 1, Olivia Newton-John Returns to Dance Club Songs

“I feel like it’s the best of both worlds," says Nate Rathbun, the 23-year-old DJ and producer from Connecticut. The song’s crossover appeal led to the top of the Dance Club Songs charts and a No. 29 peak on Pop Songs.

Rathbun says the instrumental stood the test of time, as it endured two years in his archives. "We tried multiple things with it, and each time it just didn’t work out," he says. Following a brainstorm session six months ago with Astralwerks/Capitol, the label suggested having Lady Antebellum on the track. Although the dance act’s team loved the idea, they thought the chance of it happening was unlikely. Nonetheless, the instrumental was pitched, and as Lady A's Dave Haywood put it, "We really just fell in love with the song."

"This one just felt right from the beginning," says Haywood. "It worked organically from the start, and that’s when the best music happens." He recalls hearing the track with fellow Lady A members Hillary Scott and Charles Kelley while they were in Florida on tour. “Our manager played it for us, and we were just like, 'Wow, phenomenal song.' We were in the studio about a week later and spent a full day in there just going back and forth, sent our stuff back to Audien and let him do his magic from there," he adds.

Rathbun premiered the record at EDC Las Vegas in June, and it's been a staple in his euphoric sets ever since. The two acts have yet to come together to perform the song live, but they're both into the idea. "To be able to watch the song be played in a totally different environment than what we are used to is incredibly exciting," adds Haywood. "There’s so much energy, people putting their hands up and singing; it’s the best feeling in the world."

The song’s success has exceeded all of Rathbun's expectations. "It’s the first song that even came close to being on the radio," he says. "I didn’t know what to expect. Now, it’s really getting up there."
