After a teased performance of two songs at the ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Awards on Thursday night (June 22) behind a silhouette, the world finally got a better glimpse of up-and-coming singer H.E.R. at the Staples Center on Friday night (June 23) during the second night of the BET Experience concerts featuring a lineup of Bryson Tiller, DJ Khaled and Friends, Jhene Aiko, Jidenna, Khalid and T.H.E.Y.

As the stage rotated to start the show, a fan could be heard saying “I’ve waited so long for this.” Though early in the night, a crowd was already filling in to see an artist that has been making waves with her self-titled Vol. 1 and 2 projects.

Opening to “Say It Again” from her Vol. 2, H.E.R. sang with her back to the audience in a casual sweatshirt and leggings with a lace pattern in the front of each leg. Soft and wavy curls bellowed around her petite frame, and sunglasses completed the elusive and effortless look.

If her outfit was very chill and passé, her voice was anything about. It was clear from the beginning of performing her song “Wait for It,” which she weaved into Floetry’s “Say Yes," the singer’s voice carried an air of depth, tone and clarity impressive for what appears to be a young woman in her early 20s.

Other covers brought into H.E.R.’s show included Kendrick Lamar’s “Love” and Rihanna’s “Yeah I Said It," as well as other cuts from her catalog, including the popular “Losing," “Focus," and “U." Finishing off the set in a subtle way singing as the stage rotated out, the audience was left with an introduction of one of R&B’s most promising acts.
