BTS Performs 'Idol' at Melon Music Awards 2018

During this year's Melon Music Awards, held on Saturday (Dec. 1), Korean septet BTS leaned into the traditional elements of their hit single "Idol" for an ultimate fusion of modernity and classical Korean performances.

The culmination of a 20-minute set from the popular group, the night’s performance of “Idol” opened with an intro that incorporated traditional instrumental and dance elements. It drew heavily on Korea’s samulnori percussion and talchum masked dance traditions as J-Hope, Jimin and Jungkook performed intricate choreography, flanked by performers drumming and dancing with fans and masks. Later, the four other members of BTS -- RM, Jin, Suga and V -- appeared onstage with the trio to perform a rendition of the August single.

All of BTS wore outfits that incorporated Korean traditional hanbok, similar to those worn in the song's music video.

The group also performed theatrical renditions of "Fake Love" and "Airplane Pt. 2.”

During the Melon Music Awards, BTS were awarded seven awards, the most ever during the show, including best artist and best album of the year, for Love Yourself: Tear

The night also recognized iKON with the best song of the year award for “Love Scenario,” with member B.I. taking home the best songwriter award and Wanna One receiving the record of the year award. New acts (G)I-dle and the Boyz were given best new artist awards.
