In between shows, Billboard asked Patten to create a playlist of tracks by the women who inspire her. You’ll find Alanis, of course, as well as other established forces (Paramore, Melissa Etheridge) and need-to-know rising acts like Sir Babygirl.
Check it out below.
1. Alanis Morissette, “Reasons I Drink”
Of course, my number one dressing room bop right now is Alanis’ newest single. I’m obsessed and cannot wait for the full album. No one is surprised.
2. Muna, “I Know A Place"
When we did the out-of-town tryout of Jagged Little Pill at American Repertory Theater, I road-tripped to Cambridge, Mass. with Jane Bruce and Ezra Menas, two of our fab ensemble members. We all took turns deejaying, and Ezra played us this tune. I’ve been listening to Muna ever since.
3. Emily King, “Good Friend”
I recently discovered Emily King, thanks to a friend who sent me her “Best Of” Spotify playlist. I love the tonality of her voice, and she’s a great songwriter.
4. Sir Babygirl, “Heels”
Sir Babygirl is my favorite young queer singer/songwriter right now. I saw her live in Brooklyn last summer and it was a BLAST.
5. Paramore, “That’s What You Get”
Classic teenage Lauren tune. I always wanted to rock belt and headbang like Hayley Williams. Now I get to do it eight times a week!
6. Melissa Etheridge, “I’m the Only One”
If you don’t love Melissa Etheridge, I don’t understand you. I covered this song with my band at our debut show at Rockwood Music Hall last August. It’s a pretty good song lyrically to get into the mindset for Jo, too.
7. Sammy Rae, “The Feeling”
I had a full dance party in my dressing room to this song on opening night. It is just so damn fun.
8. Sleater-Kinney, “Dig Me Out”
This song’s raw power never fails to get me in the zone when I need to summon up the energy for a show. It makes me want to thrash around like a crazy demon and I love it.
9. Samia, "21"
I did an Off-Broadway play called The Wolves with Samia back in 2016, and I’ve been fangirling over her music ever since. I love her lyrics, and her vocal playfulness reminds me a lot of Alanis.
10. Jagged Little Pill Broadway Cast Recording, "Thank U"
Yeah, that’s right. I listen to our own album...because it’s amazing!!! I am so glad that Tom Kitt had the ensemble record the full version of “Thank U” that he arranged for the run in Cambridge. The full song didn’t make it into the Broadway show, but it is such a beautiful, joyous piece and now I can listen to it all the time.
