Billboard on Broadway Podcast: 'Wicked' Cast on Starring in a Modern Broadway Blockbuster

Kara Lindsay as Glinda in WICKED

Since opening in the fall of 2003, Stephen Schwartz’s Wicked has won Tonys, made stars of its various leading ladies, and earned a place in the modern musical theater pantheon as one of Broadway’s longest-running, and most beloved, shows. The show’s current Glinda and Elphaba -- Kara Lindsay and Jennifer DiNoia -- visit this week’s Billboard on Broadway podcast to chat with host Rebecca Milzoff about taking on their now iconic roles.

“These are two powerful women leading this show, and few musicals are like that,” says Lindsay. “There are so many layers to both of these girls,” DiNoia adds. “As an actor you really want to dive into their journeys and figure them out.” Discussing the show’s score -- one chock-full of now-standards like “Popular,” “Defying Gravity” and “For Good” -- DiNoia points to Schwartz’s ability to write songs that “build in such a storytelling way, which makes them almost easier to sing, even though they’re very, very difficult songs. They make sense to you as a singer.”

The two go on to discuss their individual paths to scoring these roles, why Wicked’s appeal has endured for nearly 15 years, and how they survive belting to the rafters each night.

Wicked is currently running at the Gershwin Theatre.
