Julia Michaels on Shawn Mendes' New Album: 'He Wants People To Know How Much He's Grown' (Video)

Julia Michaels spoke with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs on the red carpet at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (May 20) about her new single “Jump,” working with Shawn Mendes on his new album and her love of Janet Jackson.

Speaking of her new track “Jump,” Michaels explains, “I wrote ‘Jump’ about wanting to be in love with somebody after getting your heart just completely pummeled and that’s so hard for people sometimes, especially for me, so I wanted to write about it and put it out in the universe.”

The singer also chats about collaborating with Shawn Mendes on his forthcoming LP, Shawn Mendes: The Album, which drops May 25.

“We went on tour together, and we had talked about writing together and we just were like if it happens, it happens. No pressure,” Michaels says. “And we ended up getting in the room together. We wrote, I think, three songs in two days and two of them are now on the record and they’re both just really intimate. One’s really fun and we just have a really good chemistry in the studio, so it worked out great.”

“I think he just wants people to know who he is and how much he’s grown,” she continues. “We had very similar conversations, talked about relationships and where he’s at and just very personal things and it’s important to him and I think that’s amazing. And it’s important to his fans, too.”

Michaels is also asked about Janet Jackson, who received the Icon Award at the BBMAs. “I’m so excited to be an artist because now I get to come here and actually be in the audience and watch these people that I’ve grown up watching be here and get awards,” she exclaims.
