"Every step she took was the opposite of traditional, and she pursued her dreams full force and never waited on someone else to give her permission," he continued.
"Jennifer leads with compassion and kindness and her joy for life is contagious," he added.
Renee Zellweger, Nicole Kidman and Lopez's children also appeared virtually to pay tribute.
"2020 is no joke, right? Before 2020, we were obsessing about winning this award or getting nominated for that award or we were caught up on who sold the most records," Lopez said, while accepting the award.
"This year was the great leveler, it showed us what mattered, what didn't. And for me, reinforced what matters most. People. All of us, together. Helping each other, loving each other, being kind to each other and the importance of that connection, that human touch," she continued.
The singer-actress also spoke of her fans and the motivations behind her success. "Your belief and your faith in me motivates me to keep going, and sometimes when I'm tired or beaten down, like a lot of us have been this year, it's my family and my friends and my babies and my fans -- you guys -- who have lifted me up when I couldn't lift myself, and I'm so grateful to have that in my life."
Lopez also mentioned the struggles she has faced as a Latina woman. "I have seen and I have learned a lot and I am still learning and I want to thank you and tell you how much I appreciate you for letting me do that in front of you all of these years. As a Latina and as a woman, we have to work twice as hard to get the opportunities. Sometimes my big dreams and my ambitions, it made the people around me nervous."
"I accept this award with great humility and gratitude," she said before she finished her speech.
