Megan Thee Stallion, Pop Smoke & Other Record-Setters at the 2020 BET Hip Hop Awards

Here are other record-setters at the 2020 BET Hip Hop Awards:

Roddy Ricch’s Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial, which spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, won hip hop album of the year. This marks the first time that an artist’s first studio album has won that award.

Pop Smoke won best new hip hop artist. This marks the second time in three years that this award has been presented posthumously. XXXTentacion won the award two years ago. Both artists were just 20 when they were shot to death. (Another fast-rising rapper, Nipsey Hussle, won hip hop artist of the year last year, a little more than six months after he was shot to death.)

The Future/Drake collab “Life Is Good” won best hip hop video. This is Future’s first win in the category; Drake’s fifth (his first in a featured role). Drake previously won for “HYFR” (featuring Lil Wayne, 2012), “Started From the Bottom” (2013), “Worst Behavior” (2014) and “Hotline Bling” (2016). This is Drake’s 20th BET Hip Hop Award, which puts him in a tie with Kendrick Lamar for second place on the all-time winners list. Jay-Z leads the list with 22 awards.

Lil Baby’s “The Bigger Picture,” which addresses the theme of race in America, won impact track. Several previous winners in this category, including Lamar’s “Alright” (2015), Jay-Z’s “The Story of O.J. (2017) and Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” (2018), also addressed this theme. All three of those songs went on to receive Grammy nominations for record and/or song of the year, which bodes well for Lil Baby’s widely admired track.
