The award for BMI’s gospel song of the year went to “I’m Getting Ready,” co-written by Todd Galberth.

Kirk Franklin was named songwriter of the year at BMI’s 2020 Trailblazers of Gospel Music event. The honorees were announced Monday (June 29) on and across the organization’s digital platforms.

Franklin took the top award for writing three of BMI’s most performed gospel songs of 2019 --- “If You Don’t Mind,” “Love Theory” and “Never Alone.” Franklin has now won 17 BMI Awards to go with his 16 Grammys and numerous other awards.

The award for BMI’s gospel song of the year went to “I’m Getting Ready,” co-written by Todd Galberth. The song was performed by Tasha Cobbs Leonard featuring Nicki Minaj. This is Galberth’s first BMI gospel award.

Songs of Kobalt Music Publishing was named publisher of the year for representing five of the top performing gospel songs of the year, the aforementioned “I’m Getting Ready” as well as "If You Don’t Mind,” “Never Alone,” “Stand In Awe” and “Victory.”

“BMI is proud to honor these remarkable luminaries of Gospel music,” said Catherine Brewton, BMI vice president creative, Atlanta. “Their music gives us strength and encouragement, and their voices are a source of comfort and healing when we need it most.”

BMI reports that it had 20 first-time trailblazer award recipients this year, including Maranda Curtis (“Nobody Like You Lord”), Chanda Mukula (“Mention”), VaShawn Mitchell (“He Got Up”), Jonathan McReynolds and Terrell Demetrius Wilson (“Not Lucky, I’m Loved”), Jeffery L. Thomas II and Dwight Washington II (“Open The Floodgates”) and Wendi Henderson Wyatt (“No Reason To Fear”).

To honor these achievements, BMI created a page on its website where fans can watch special video messages and performances, listen to award-winning music and learn more about their favorite gospel songwriters:
