Ella Mai caught up with Billboard on the red carpet at the 2020 Grammy Awards, chatting about meeting Beyoncé, what fans can expect from her sophomore album, and more.

Mai, who attended the Roc Nation brunch over the weekend, tells Billboard that just as she was getting ready to leave, she saw Beyoncé walking in, and having never met her before, she wanted to go over and introduce herself.

“I went to go and introduce myself and she saw me,” says Mai. “She saw me and started smiling and I was like, wait…She was really, really sweet. She told me to keep going and congratulations on all my success and that she loves me…To be able to have that moment with someone that I grew up looking up to and I still look up to, I'm so inspired by her. It was just a great, great feeling.”

In the interview, the singer is asked what the most rewarding part of her self-titled debut album cycle has been. She replies that getting to tour for the entire year, she’s had an opportunity to connect with her fans around the world, which has been very special for her.

Mai is also asked if there are any collaborations that might appear on her next record, having recently joined forces with Usher on a track. “I just came back from tour, so I've just started, so the canvas is very blank right now and I'm not sure,” she replies. “I loved working with Usher, I loved the record, so yeah, we'll see. I have no clue!”
