Portrayals of Music Legends Judy Garland & Elton John Land Golden Globe Nominations

Both Garland and Elton John have won Golden Globes. John went on to win the Oscar; Garland, controversially, did not.

Portrayals of music legends Judy Garland and Elton John received Golden Globe nominations on Monday morning (Dec. 9). Renée Zellweger's portrayal of Garland in Judy is nominated for for best performance by an actress in a motion picture, drama. Taron Egerton's portrayal of John in Rocketman is nominated for best performance by an actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy.

This is the second year in a row that a portrayal of a British rock legend has been nominated in the latter category. Rami Malek was nominated (and won) last year for playing Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. Malek went on to win the Oscar as well.

Both Garland and Elton John won Golden Globes in the past. Garland won for her 1954 performance in the first musical iteration of A Star Is Born; John won for his 1994 song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from the original The Lion King. John went on to win the Oscar as well. Garland, controversially, did not. (Groucho Marx famously called her loss to screen beauty Grace Kelly "the greatest robbery since Brink's.")

Cynthia Erivo is a double nominee for Harriet. She is nominated for best performance by an actress in a motion picture, drama and for co-writing "Stand Up," a finalist for best original song, with Joshuah Brian Campbell. Lady Gaga was nominated in both categories last year, winning for best original song. If Erivo wins an Oscar, either for best actress or best original song, she will become an EGOT.

Jennifer Lopez is nominated for best performance by an actress in a supporting role in any motion picture for Hustlers. Another sometime recording star, Eddie Murphy, is nominated for best performance by an actor in a motion picture -- musical or comedy for Dolemite Is My Name.

Portrayals of Broadway legends Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon in FX's Fosse/Verdon are nominated in TV categories. Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams are vying for actor and actress in a TV movie or limited series. In September, Williams won a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance in the series about the notoriously demanding choreographer-director and the dancer/actress.

Netflix is the top motion picture distributor, with 17 Globe nominations, followed by Sony Pictures Releasing (eight), and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures,with six each. Netflix's 17 nominations also makes them the top television network,  followed by HBO (15), and hulu and Prime Video, with five each.

The 77th annual Golden Globe Awards will be presented on Jan. 5 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif. Ricky Gervais is set to host the show for the fifth time. Two popular stars, Tom Hanks and Ellen DeGeneres, are set to receive the night's honorary awards, the Cecil B. DeMille Award and the Carol Burnett Award, respectively.
