Carole King Says She Loves How Taylor Swift 'Is Carrying It Forward': Watch

Carole King spoke with Billboard’s Tetris Kelly on the red carpet at the 2019 American Music Awards on Sunday (Nov. 24), discussing honoring artist of the decade Taylor Swift and sharing advice for younger artists.

King, who was in attendance at the event to present Taylor Swift with the artist of the decade award, tells Billboard that she is so happy to be there to honor Swift.

“I'm like the grandmother,” she jokes. “I don't mind if people know my age 'cause I own it, I love it, and I'm just fine. But I love what Taylor's doing. She is carrying it forward.”

In light of Swift’s recent battle with her former label over the rights to her music, King is asked to share any words of wisdom for younger artists who might find themselves in similar situations.

“We all sign up with people and some are good and some are not,” King says. “I can't speak…for her but I've done okay, but there have been people along the way who try to take advantage and you have to try not to be in that situation and…you have to try not to ask for too much.”
